Knock Boxes & Dosing Cups
Knock boxes, dosing cups and the small extras that keep an espresso bar working cleanly. Coffee grounds block drains, so a knock box pays for itself the first time it saves a plumber call — and in a UAE apartment where the building manages the plumbing, that call is not one you want to make twice.
Which knock box do you need?
At home. The Sage Knock Box 10 (SEA501) holds up to ten spent pucks, which is roughly a day of household use or a busy morning. The knock bar is removable, which sounds like a detail until you have washed one that is not. The Knock Box 20 (SEA502) is the larger version of the same design, sized for twenty pucks — the right choice if you are making coffee for a household rather than one person, or dialling in a new bag and pulling shot after shot without walking to the bin between attempts.
Behind a bar. The Rhino Thumpa is a floor-standing knock tube for high-volume service, so the barista knocks out at hip height without bending to a counter box. The EDO knock box comes as Chute or Bottomless, the bottomless version dropping straight into a bin below the counter, which is the version to specify if you are building the bar rather than adding to it.
The quiet alternative
Knocking a portafilter is loud, it throws grounds around, and over years it is not kind to the machine or the portafilter ears. The Sage Puck Sucker (SEA503) does the same job silently: press a 58mm portafilter down, an automatically activated suction cup creates a rapid vacuum, and the puck lifts out whole in one action. No knock, no mess. Worth considering in an open-plan apartment, an office, or anywhere someone is asleep on the other side of the wall at 6am.
Note the size — the Puck Sucker is for 58mm portafilters. If you are on a Sage Barista machine you are on 54mm; our 54mm vs 58mm guide explains which accessories fit which machine.
Dosing cups
A dosing cup lets you grind straight into a cup, weigh the dose, and transfer it into the basket. It keeps grounds off the counter, lets you check the weight before you tamp, and improves distribution on the way into the basket. The Rhino dosing cup in the short profile sits under most grinder spouts without a stand.
